German Pavilion – Expo 2015 Milan

Planning and implementation of a sustainable exhibition concept

“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” was the guiding theme of Expo 2015 in Milan. The German Pavilion, titled “Fields of Ideas”, interpreted this theme by presenting Germany as a vibrant, fertile landscape full of innovative ideas for the future of food.

The pavilion conveyed the importance of a responsible relationship with nature to ensure food security and encouraged visitors to actively engage with the exhibition.

The architecture, designed as a gently rising landscape, reflects German fields and rural scenery. Key design elements are stylized plants emerging from the exhibition as “seeds of ideas” and unfolding into a leafy canopy. Visitors could explore the “Fields of Ideas” in two ways: by walking across the freely accessible landscape level or by entering the thematic exhibition inside the pavilion, which addressed food, food production and consumption in urban environments.

Our services
  • Planning and construction supervision of the complete building services systems, including approval planning

  • Fire protection design including permitting and final inspection

The technical systems were designed for a six-month operation during the summer period. Energy consumption was reduced primarily through passive strategies, partially open façades, optimized shading and a precise definition of performance requirements.

The climate control concept was tailored to the building’s temporary use, while minimizing technical systems to what was strictly necessary contributed significantly to overall sustainability. Particular attention was paid to reducing embodied energy in material production, an essential aspect for temporary construction.
